I expected a gimmick

No. This is the one thing it does not do, and it causes almost every bad review this product category gets. It holds a chill rather than creating one. A room temperature bottle will come down a couple of degrees and no further. Put the bottle in the fridge, keep the rod in the freezer, and use them together.
No, and please do not try. Sparkling bottles are thicker, narrower at the neck and under pressure. Still whites and rosés only. If you want your prosecco cold, the fridge is the answer.
It fits standard 750ml still wine bottles, screw caps included, which is the large majority of what you will open. It does not fit sparkling bottles, and it will not fit unusually narrow necked bottles like some dessert wines.
Yes, always. The rod takes up room, so a full bottle will overflow the moment you put it in. Pour one glass, then let the rod slide down the neck under its own weight. Never push it.
